How To Gain Muscle Without Losing Weight?

I’m 90 pounds, 5′2, and I really need to become fit. I have been kind of procrastinating on this because I am afraid that if I start to exercise, I will end up losing weight and looking even skinnier. What are some good workouts I can do without risking weight loss? What are some good general strength gaining exercises? At 90 pounds, how much weight should I be able to lift?

You won’t lose weight, you’ll gain muscle mass, which actually weighs more than fat. In high school, I worked out, I’m a little shorter than you (5′1″) and weighed about 100 lbs and in a few months I actually weighed 115 lbs and my doctor said I looked like I was about 95. I would concentrate on the areas you want to work in. For instance, if you want to strengthen your legs, ride your bike up and down hills and change the gear settings to higher settings as you get stronger. Go to the gym and do a little weight lifting with your legs. For your abs, do lots of sit ups and when you can do a lot, get a small weight and do some with those and keep gradually adding weight. For arms, go to the sporting goods store and pick up some dumb bells and gradually work your weight up on that too.
